Sherrin discusses with Greg Cary on the 4BC Grey Cary Morning Show the need for routine activities for flood affected children and alsoprovides data from a recent survey about classroom sizes.
After a tragedy or a disaster, children need to return to daily routines in order to build a sense of security and stability. Attending school, eating breakfast at the same time, having the same bed time and reinstating other usual activities help children ‘heal’ from difficult events that threaten their sense of security and well- being. Adults need to be aware that children absorb stress and information around them; they often listen to conversations adults have about finances and future prospects and they can become concerned or worried. Be sure to discuss issues with your children so that they don’t catastrophise or become unduly anxious. Keep them focused on doing usual routines to help build their sense of ‘back to normal.’
An Australia Survey has found that 77% of the people interviewed link strong economic growth in the future with the Federal government investment in public schools. Most survey wanted more government investment spent to increase resources and decrease class sizes as opposed with providing teachers with pay rises or bonuses.
