Sherrin talks on Greg Cary’s 4BC Morning Show – handling poor behaviour in the classroom, not all students suited to classroom education for years 11 and 12 and Australian children learning Asian languages.
It is my experience that defensive and disruptive behaviour tends to come from a combination of lack of success (or a lack of perceived success), a lack of confidence (often resulting from a lack of success or a lack of perceived success that can come from some perfectionist qualities) and making situations into win lose situations thus escalating conflict, anger, hurt and disruption.
I have found that the single most effective strategy to use with learners to keep them focused and interested and on task is providing learning and interaction that builds their immediate success and their sense of worth; this in turn will inspire the learners to engage, be responsive and to respect the classroom environment, themselves and others.
Success is never a burden; success builds confidence; success makes releases positive energy.
